exploring sounds in newry mill w/ wendy owens

Me and my friend wendy decided to go on a little field recording trip out to the newry mill that i went to a few months back i hoped to get alot more recorded this time because last time i focused mainly on footage.

The main room we were recording in was the furnace room i believe, here is some footage of the recording below.

I found a little electrical box that had a series of tumblers that you could spin there was also random metal in there than made little clinks and noises.

Here is a clip of wendy messing around with the pipes hanging down from the mill.

This clip is from a little wheel that was on a wooden door.

And here are some more clips of wendy exploring around the mills sound.

All in all this was a really fun trip, it was nice to have someone with me this time around exploring the sound of the place, this is a space i play to return to time and time again, there is so much to explore and so many possibilities.

exploring abandoned newry textile mill

Ever since I have lived here I would always see this mill off in the distance while crossing a bridge on the way to town and I’ve always wondered about it. Today I decided to venture out to it with my field recording gear to explore it a bit. The building is so lovely; it is a textile mill that was shut down in 1975 and has been slowing been breaking down over the years. The paint is all chipping and the wood is holding together by what little strength it has left in it. The place would be perfect if it had no graffiti in it which is a real shame. In all the footage and pictures I took I made sure to get angles so that there is little to no graffiti in sight.

While exploring the mill i took several recordings using the space and things found in the space to produce sound in little improvisations that will be show in audio & video below.

To check out over 100+ photos that i took of the mill you can go here.

In the video of the mill walk through i have made a generative audio piece that was made using sound from the mill.

Here is the first of two inprovs this one was done on the top floor using what ever i could find on the ground and walls to get sound from.

and here is the second improv which was done down in the furnace room once again using what ever i could find laying around as well as the acoustics of the space.

Here is some more un-edited footage:

This clip is from up in the stair tower.

here is a video of a snake i ran in to while exploring the bottom part of the mill.

There is still a few more things being uploaded but i figured i would publish the post since most of it is up, check back later for everything. thanks for checking out my work.
